Academy Chaplain – Landon Teall

Landon has been the youth pastor at Calvary Baptist Church since 2003. He teaches high school Sunday School, Sunday Youth Group and Wednesday Youth Group each week.  He organizes and leads two youth events each month as well as an afterglow at a church family’s house. He is a part of a young men’s Bible study and also heads up open gym twice a month for the youth and adults from our church. He loves music and participates in the youth group praise team, special music, young men’s quartet, orchestra and choir.

He has been married since 2003 to Aubrey and they have three kids, Maxwell, Madison and Mia. Aubrey and the kids are heavily involved in the ministry at Calvary whether youth group, nursery, projects, crafts, Jr. Church, Day Camp or VBS. Aubrey and Landon are actively engaged outside of church as well by helping local families with projects or house cleaning and most often are including the young people in these activities.

Landon is a graduate from Cornerstone University but also attended Cedarville University and Saginaw Valley State University. He has a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible and a minor in Youth Ministry. In high school and college, he delivered newspapers (Bay City Times), worked maintenance (Cornerstone University) and also was a bicycle sales and repair rep at Bay Vac and Pedal.

Here at Calvary Christian Academy, Landon seeks to come alongside parents and teachers to meet the spiritual needs of the student body.

Kindergarten teacher – Sharon Avram

I am Sharon Avram. I have been teaching Kindergarten since 1984. I started my teaching with my own children on the mission field in Palau, Micronesia. In 1986 we moved to Guam where my late husband and I started Lighthouse Baptist Church. While living in Guam, I taught Kindergarten at Harvest Christian Academy for the next 10 years. I lost my husband to cancer and returned four years later and remarried. I then moved to Ohio and then to Michigan.

I taught Early Five’s and Kindergarten at Ogemaw Hills Christian School, West Branch, from 1998-2009. OHCS closed it’s doors that year so my daughter in law and I began to work for parents that desired Christian Education. I taught Early Five’s and Kindergarten at Calvary Baptist Church using a classroom in the church.

This year I am employed by Calvary Christian Academy and am thankful and excited to continue to teach Early Five’s and Kindergarten. I love to teach this age group. We have lots of fun in my classroom. We will be reading words by November, and continue to build our ability throughout the school year. Basic Math concepts will be taught with a lot of hands on. We will learn about 60 Bible verses throughout the school year. We will have special activities during the year. We have Show and Tell almost every week. We will go on field trips that help us learn outside the classroom. At the end of the school year we usually put on a Musical play.

I LOVE what I do. I love my students and they know that I do. I am called by God who has enabled me to teach. I am thankful to know Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I desire my students to see Christ in me and in turn see my students to learn and know Christ as their personal Savior.

Personal life: I have 4 children who are all serving and active in Church. I am blessed to have 12 Grandchildren. I attend Calvary Baptist Church. I teach 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School, volunteer for Nursery and serve in any capacity where needed.

1st/2nd grade teacher – Mrs. Carey Thomsen

This will be Carey’s 14th year of teaching.  She graduated from CMU in 2004 with her Elementary Education degree. She is currently working on her Master’s from Saginaw Valley State University.  Carey taught at Standish Elementary for 1 year, Ogemaw Hills Christian School for 3 1/2 years and then taught various homeschoolers for 7 years.   She has also done some long term subbing for various schools after graduation.   This will be her 3rd year at CCA!

She loves teaching lower elementary but has taught all grades 1st-8th.  Her favorite subjects to teach are Bible, Phonics, and Social Studies.  She is looking forward to a great year!

Carey has been married to her husband for 12 years and they have two boys.  She is very active at Calvary Baptist Church teaching junior church, helping in the nursery, playing flute in the orchestra and is the director for the Awana Cubbie program.

3rd/ 4th grade teacher – Laurel Tecmire

My name is Laurel Tecmire. I’ve been married to my husband Whit for 39 years. We have two sons, a daughter-in-law and two precious grandsons.

I was raised in a Christian family and came to know the Lord at a young age. At 11 years old I truly recognized MY sin and committed my life to serving the Lord.

I love my family and Sunday dinners with them. I also love gardening, reading, coffee, graph paper, organizing, decorating, garage sales, crafts and yellow.

I don’t remember a time in my life that I haven’t worked with children! They are my God given passion and I believe I was given the spiritual gift of teaching.  I have always taught somewhere, whether it was talking to my childhood friends in the neighborhood about Jesus, teaching youth group, women’s ministry’s, VBS, Day Camp, Sunday School or being a mentor at the Caring Pregnancy Center.

I had the honor of teaching Junior High at Ogemaw Hills Christian School for three years before they closed. It was a dream come true.

More than even the academic side of teaching, I enjoy teaching critical thinking, reasoning, character and integrity. I am a teacher who encourages the question…. WHY?

5th – 8th grade teacher – Melissa Olsen

Melissa puts a great emphasis on World History and Science which are her interests. She is looking forward to inspiring students to read and discuss the timeline of events. She will also be showing the students computer programming and beginning Latin studies.

Melissa graduated from Saginaw Valley State in 2005 with a degree in Computer Science. She has been married to her husband for 11 years and has home-schooled their two boys for 5 years.

Dena Alderton

New to the CCA staff this year teaching junior high science is Dena Alderton.  She began teaching in 1994.  For the last 24 years Dena has homeschooled her six children from pre-school all the way through the high school years.

That entire time she also organized and participated in the founding of more than one homeschool co-op, which have been registered with INCH. (Information Network for Christian Homes)  The local co-op, TRUTH, was one of those groups, and has provided supplemental instruction classes, field trips, and a positive social experience for the local homeschool community for 13 years and counting.

Dena looks forward to broadening her horizons in hopes of bringing her teaching experiences to her home church’s school.

Dena and her husband Eric have been members of Calvary Baptist Church for many years, serving in different capacities as the Lord guides and directs their lives.  They enjoy spending time with family, camping and being in the out-of-doors.
